Department Overview

The Controls Engineering Intern (Sustainment) will support reliability, stability, and performance optimization of solid oxide fuel cell systems operating in production environments. The role emphasizes control system sustainment, alarm and event analytics, and data driven evaluation of system behavior using PLC/SCADA-based architectures and large operational data sets.

Position Responsibilities

  • Support investigation and root cause analysis of control system faults, abnormal operating conditions, and alarm events
  • Assist with sustainment of industrial control systems
  • Analyze large time‑series data sets (alarms, events, operational signals) to identify trends, correlations, and failure precursors
  • Evaluate alarm performance and support alarm rationalization efforts
  • Apply statistical analysis and pattern recognition techniques to detect anomalies in system behavior
  • Develop basic predictive or trend‑based models to anticipate performance degradation or control issues
  • Create scripts or tools to automate data processing, visualization, and reporting

What You’ll Gain

  • Hands on experience with production scale control systems
  • Exposure to real operational data and sustainment challenges in industrial environments

Minimum Qualifications

  • Currently a student earning a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Controls Engineering or a related Engineering discipline.
  • Must be graduating between spring 2026 and summer 2027

Desired Qualifications

  • Understanding of control systems fundamentals (sensors, actuators, PID, feedback loops)
  • Strong analytical skills and ability to interpret complex technical data
  • Experience with data analysis or scripting (Python, MATLAB, or similar)
  • Familiarity with time series analysis, statistics, or predictive modeling concepts
  • Pursuing M.S. degree
