We are looking for a Senior Principal Engineer - Materials, to join our team in one of today’s most exciting technologies. This role will report to Director, Development Engineering and based in San Jose, CA

Location: This role will be based in San Jose, CA. It is fully on-site, in office role.

Role and Responsibilities

  • The Sr. Principal Engineer, Materials is responsible for identifying innovative improvements to solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) component materials processing, and will deliver impactful changes to stack component materials, materials processing, and manufacturing methods to improve stack manufacturability, yield, efficiency, lifetime, and cost
  • Reporting to the director of stack engineering as a member of the stack engineering leadership team, the ideal candidate possesses world-class expertise in processing and properties of SOFC stack components, such as the alloy interconnect (IC); leverages this expertise to drive improvements in thermo-mechanical properties, such as coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) and shape stability; determines how critical component properties impact stack manufacturing yield and performance; and identifies breakthrough opportunities for material improvements
  • As a key technical leader for the organization, the Sr. Principal Engineer, Materials interfaces with external technical people from the working level to senior-most technical staff at current and/or developing suppliers; and internally with Bloom engineering, quality and manufacturing personnel.
  • The candidate has a demonstrated ability to innovate, and deliver on complex technical programs with cross-functional, interrelated constraints

Skills and Experience:

  • Ph.D degree (preferred) with minimum 10 years' commercial industry engineering experience, or Master of Science degree with minimum 12 years' experience, in the field of Materials Science & Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related engineering field is required
  • World-class expertise in thermo-mechanical properties of materials such as CTE, and shape evolution at high temperature, is required
  • Demonstrated ability to work with Big Data sets, including high-resolution spatial imagery, and to employ novel statistical analysis and data visualization methods to distill original, actionable insights is required
  • Demonstrated ability to drive changes in a high-volume manufacturing context (tens of millions of components) with 1st- and 2nd-tier suppliers in a global supply chain is required
  • Experience in high temperature (>600 C) metal alloys is required
  • Hands-on experience in solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) stacks or related electrochemical devices is preferred, but not required
  • Experience with powder metallurgy (PM) processing is a plus
  • Very strong technical leadership skills
  • Exceptional analytical/problem solving skills and attention to detail
  • Strong self-starter and team player with a can-do attitude
  • Excellent communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills
  • Occasional travel to domestic and international suppliers is required (up to 4 times per year)

Salary Ranges:

$175,500.00 - $252,500.00
