The BIW Maintenance Manager leads the maintenance operations for the Body-in-White shop in a high-volume automotive manufacturing environment. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing and executing maintenance strategies that ensure equipment availability, reduce downtime, and support safe and efficient production. This role requires strong leadership skills, technical expertise in body shop automation systems, and a commitment to operational excellence.
You Will:
- Develop and implement preventive, predictive, and reactive maintenance programs for BIW equipment and utilities.
- Ensure alignment of maintenance strategies with production demands, model changes, and shop takt time.
- Manage asset lifecycle planning, spare parts inventory, and reliability engineering activities.
- Lead a team of maintenance supervisors, technicians, and engineers across multiple shifts.
- Set performance goals, monitor KPIs, and coach the team to improve safety, equipment uptime, and skill levels.
- Develop technical training programs to upskill team members on joining technologies, robotics, and controls.
- Monitor OEE, MTTR, and MTBF metrics to drive performance improvements.
- Lead root cause analysis for critical downtime events and ensure effective corrective actions are implemented.
- Collaborate with Engineering and Production teams to support equipment upgrades and retooling projects.
- Oversee the health and diagnostics of automated BIW systems, including robots, welding cells, conveyors, clamps, and vision systems.
- Coordinate troubleshooting and support for PLCs, HMIs, sensors, and safety systems (Siemens, Allen-Bradley, Fanuc, ABB, etc.).troubleshooting and support for PLCs, HMIs
- Support the integration of new equipment and technologies during vehicle program launches.
- Ensure compliance with health, safety, and environmental regulations (e.g., LOTO, electrical safety, FLS).
- Maintain documentation and audit readiness for internal standards and external certifications (e.g., IATF 16949, ISO 14001, ISO 9001).
- Implement and sustain 5S and TPM (Total Productive Maintenance) systems in the shop.
- Develop and manage the BIW maintenance budget including labor, parts, and external services.
- Optimize the use of contractors and suppliers to support maintenance activities while managing cost and quality.
- Track expenditures and identify opportunities for cost reduction through energy savings, reliability improvements, or technology upgrades.
- Collaborate with Manufacturing Engineering for new product introductions, launch ramp-up, and handover processes.
- Support operations and quality teams in resolving production bottlenecks caused by equipment issues.
- Participate in launch readiness reviews, risk assessments, and design for maintainability discussions.
You Bring:
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Mechatronics, or Industrial Engineering (Master’s degree preferred).
- 10+ years of progressive experience in automotive maintenance with at least 3 years in a managerial role.
- Strong understanding of BIW joining technologies (spot welding, MIG/MAG welding, clinching, hemming, adhesive, vision and laser welding).
- Proven experience managing automated systems and robotics in high-volume production.
- Knowledge of TPM, CMMS systems and lean manufacturing principles.
- Exceptional leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills.
- Flexibility to support off-shift and weekend operations as required.
