A Brief Summary of This Position:

This position works under the direction of the Production Supervisor or Lead Person and is responsible for set-up and operation of one-two of several activities pertaining to the Shearing, Forming, Burnishing, Buffing, Straightening, and Cut Off (Saw) of tubes produced for and by the Big Wheel line at Valmont Industries, TX. The employee will also assist as directed setup of other areas to gain knowledge of entire process.

Standard Shift: 3rd shift (Nights) Monday - Friday 11PM - 7AM

Starting Hourly Pay Rate (LG5): $21.92 + $1.00 per hour shift differential

Eligible for annual discretionary bonus

Opportunity for step pay increases at 90 days, 1 year & 2 years

Tube Line Operator 5 consist of learning one-two of the following:

  • Blow Out, Burnishing, Buffing, Straightening, and Cut Off (Saw)

  • Forming

  • Shearing

Essential Functions:

  • Performs Shear, Former, Burnisher, Straightening, and Cut Off set-ups to assure optimal performance

  • Adjusts Hydraulic, Pneumatic, Mechanical, and Electrical devices

  • Initiates manual and auto cycles from Manual Controls or PLC touch panel

  • Uses pneumatic powered tools to buff/grind product to specification

  • Use SMAW/Stick and GMAW/Gas Metal arc welder to repair split seams that may occur during production

  • Performs set-up of Straightener to assure hold down cables and roller supports are located correctly for varying sizes of tubes

  • Inspects product according to Valmont and Industry Standards. Performs close visual inspection of product to discover any discontinuities not meeting Valmont and Industry Standards.

  • Maintains all equipment in designated area to assure proper working condition at all times

  • Performs regular preventative maintenance on all equipment in assigned areas

  • Notifies Supervisor and/or Lead Person when assistance is required for maintenance and /or other repairs that are beyond his/her capabilities

  • Assists Maintenance personnel on performing maintenance and repair work as needed

  • Assists and/or performs set-up of other production equipment as directed by Lead Person

  • Keeps assigned area clean

  • Helps maintain housekeeping program throughout Tube Mill as directed by Lead Person

  • Maintains Safety awareness and be alert at all times, to detect, avoid, and/or correct unsafe conditions

  • Records and maintains data, recording setups, inspection, and product documentation

  • Operates forklift to move material in the shop areas

  • Other duties as assigned, directed

Required Qualifications of Every Candidate (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities):

  • Minimum of 6 months of machine operation experience

  • Perform basic math functions such as adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing

  • Pass a forklift test from Valmont’s safety department

  • Read a tape measure

  • The ability to prioritize work in order and complete deadlines

  • Read and follow written and verbal instructions

  • The ability to work through and solve practical problems

  • The ability to work timely and expeditiously to deliver on-time, high quality results

Burnisher/Buffer/Straightener/Cut Off (Saw)

  • Read and write clearly

  • Basic math

  • Able to read O.D. tape and tape measure

  • Certified to GMAW

  • Use of Microsoft Excel

Tube Line Former Operator

  • Read and write clearly

  • Basic math

  • Able to read O.D. tape and tape measure

  • Use of Microsoft Excel

Tube Line Shear Line Operator

  • Read and write clearly

  • Basic math

  • Able to read O.D. tape and tape measure

  • Must be able to use micrometer

  • Use of Microsoft Excel

Highly Qualified Candidates Will Also Possess These Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent

  • One (1) year of previous experience operating manufacturing machinery is preferred

  • Previous hands-on welding experience in a professional environment

  • One (1) year of previous experience in a manufacturing or fabrication environment

  • Experience operating overhead crane

  • Experience working with Lean manufacturing methodology

Working Environment and Physical Efforts:

This job is usually performed in an indoor shop environment. The temperature range can be from 105 degrees in the summer to about 40 degrees in the winter. There will likely be exposure to mill scale, lubricating fluids, occasionally smoke from cutting/welding operations Most operations may expose employee to some type of disagreeable working conditions (wind, cold, heat, dust, dirt, fumes, noise, vibration, water, or oil). Working conditions may vary with specific work assignments. Some outside work may be required to bring in railcar and check coils for inventory. This is a noisy environment with sound levels around 80 decibels. Must be able to occasionally lift up to 50 pounds, although most frequent lift is up to 10 pounds.

Safety glasses, earplugs, and metatarsal safety shoes are required at all times in the plant. The employee will operate machines that use liquid coolant and may also be exposed to cast iron dust as well as other steel particles. The employee must be able to spend the entire work shift within this warehouse environment normally standing or moving around the warehouse floor.

Incumbent will also be exposed to production facilities where specific PPE will be required such as hand, hearing, foot, eye, and head protection. Being outside will also expose them to material handling equipment such as forklifts, straddle trucks, and shag trucks.
