Job Description

As a Thermal Performance Engineer I, you will help monitor and improve the thermal efficiency of a fleet of natural‑gas power plants. Working with senior engineers, you will analyze real‑time PI data, maintain and validate cycle models, and recommend corrective actions that keep units operating at peak performance.

Responsibilities

  • Review daily PI Vision / EtaPRO dashboards and highlight deviations in heat‑rate, output, temperatures, and vibrations.
  • Build and update simplified thermodynamic cycle models to calculate expected performance under varying ambient and load conditions.
  • Support data extraction and analysis (Excel, Python, Power BI) to identify trends, develop KPI reports, and troubleshoot plant issues.
  • Collaborate with plant operations and maintenance teams to investigate performance losses and document root‑cause findings.
  • Maintain a library of calculation sheets, scripts, and standard work procedures for recurrent analyses.
  • Assist in the development of new PI AF analytics, tags, and event frames that automatically flag emerging performance concerns.
  • Present results in clear, concise formats—dashboards, slide decks, and technical memos—for both technical and non‑technical audiences.
  • Participate in continuous‑improvement projects, learning advanced analytics, digital‑twin concepts, and pattern‑recognition methods used by the team.
  • Engage in a structured training and mentoring program to build foundational skills in power‑plant thermal performance engineering, progressing from guided analyses to independent performance improvement projects.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Chemical, Aerospace, or Electrical Engineering (or closely related field).
  • Solid understanding of thermodynamics, heat‑transfer, and Brayton/Rankine power cycles from coursework or internship/co‑op.
  • Proficiency with Excel (formulas, pivot tables) and basic data analysis or programming (e.g., MATLAB or Python).
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills with a bias for data‑driven decision making.
  • Effective written and verbal communication abilities; comfortable presenting technical information to peers and plant staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to work hands‑on, manage multiple tasks, and meet deadlines in a team environment.
  • Eligible to work in the United States without employer‑sponsored visa assistance now or in the future.
  • A valid driver’s license and ability to travel up to 20% of the time to project sites in the U.S., industry conferences, and team meetings.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Internship or co‑op experience in power generation, energy, or industrial process industries.
  • Experience with thermodynamic heat balance tools (Thermoflow, GateCycle)
  • Exposure to PI System (PI Data Archive, PI AF, PI Vision), EtaPRO, or similar time‑series historian/analytics platforms.
  • Experience with Power BI, Tableau, or similar visualization tools.
