Job Description

The Test Engineering Manager is responsible for leading the development and implementation of manufacturing and commissioning test strategies for Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) within a New Product Introduction (NPI) and Contract Manufacturing (CM) environment.

This role serves as the technical authority for product validation, manufacturing test architecture, and pre-commissioning strategy, ensuring that test systems are robust, scalable, and capable of supporting global production ramp. The manager will lead a team of test engineers and collaborate closely with product engineering, systems engineering, quality, and manufacturing teams to ensure that BESS products meet performance, safety, and reliability requirements before shipment to customers.

The position requires hands-on expertise in power electronics testing, battery system validation, automated test systems, and factory commissioning, as well as strong leadership skills to guide engineering teams and support global manufacturing operations.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Leadership

  • Serve as the technical expert for BESS manufacturing test strategy, including automated test systems, validation methods, and commissioning procedures.
  • Define and implement manufacturing test architecture for battery systems, power electronics, and system-level integration.
  • Lead development of automated test equipment and validation systems to ensure scalable and repeatable manufacturing test operations.
  • Define factory commissioning strategies to validate full BESS functionality prior to shipment.
  • Establish test coverage and acceptance criteria aligned with product specifications, safety requirements, and customer expectations.
  • Oversee Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and Site Acceptance Testing (SAT) for manufacturing test equipment and commissioning systems.
  • Support root cause analysis and technical troubleshooting for test failures, product issues, and manufacturing equipment problems.

Team Leadership

  • Manage and mentor a global team of test engineers, providing technical guidance, career development, and project leadership.
  • Allocate resources across programs to support NPI builds, pilot runs, and production ramp.
  • Drive engineering excellence through best practices, standards, and knowledge sharing across the global organization.

NPI & Manufacturing Integration

  • Lead development and deployment of manufacturing test plans for NPI builds and production ramp.
  • Work closely with design engineering to ensure testability is incorporated early in the product design process (DFT).
  • Participate in DFMEA and PFMEA reviews to identify and mitigate manufacturing and test risks.
  • Support contract manufacturers with test system installation, debug, validation, and launch activities.
  • Develop test documentation, procedures, and operational standards aligned with quality systems.

Program Execution

  • Serve as the test engineering lead within the NPI program core team, supporting program milestones and product launch readiness.
  • Coordinate with equipment vendors, contract manufacturers, and engineering teams to ensure timely deployment of test systems.
  • Provide technical updates and readiness reviews to program leadership and executive stakeholders.
  • Lead continuous improvement initiatives to improve test efficiency, product quality, and manufacturing throughput.
  • Provide high-level project updates and status to stakeholders at all levels of the company.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field (controls or power electronics preferred).
  • 8+ years of experience in test engineering, product validation, or manufacturing test development.
  • 3+ years of experience leading or managing global engineering teams.
  • Strong understanding of automated test system architecture and development.
  • Familiarity with system-level electrical function and layout, especially related to grid-level interconnections
  • Experience with power electronics, battery systems, or energy storage technologies.
  • Strong project management and cross-functional collaboration skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), inverters, or power conversion systems.
  • Previous experience designing, implementing, or commissioning full grid-scale charge/discharge (CDC) test systems
  • Hands-on experience with data acquisition hardware and automated test systems.
  • Experience with test software platforms such as LabVIEW, TestStand, or equivalent automation frameworks.
  • Ability to read and analyze electrical schematics and system-level wiring diagrams.
  • Experience leading equipment installation, FAT/SAT validation, and production launch activities.
  • Knowledge of quality systems, DFMEA/PFMEA, and manufacturing process risk assessments.
  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills with a data-driven approach to problem solving.

Additional Requirements

  • Willingness to work with global teams across multiple time zones.
  • Expected travel: 40–50% globally, with up to 75% travel during major product launches or factory bring-up activities.
