**This Individual Contributor role is hybrid onsite 4 days/week at our Fremont location.

**This role will initially require frequent travel to Asia every month or two.

Job Description

We are seeking a highly skilled engineer to support the development and integration of drive systems (electric motors and mechanical transmissions) for single axis solar trackers. The ideal candidate is a talented mechanical engineer who demonstrates strong leadership, analytical skills, system-level mindset, commitment to innovation, attention to details, and passion for the solar industry. This position is based in Fremont, CA and will report to the Director of Systems Engineering.

Key Responsibilities

  • Drive the development and sustaining engineering activities for the drive system components (electric motors and mechanical transmissions) of single axis solar trackers.
  • Communicate with the product managers and functional managers to understand product vision, technical and resource constraints.
  • Perform system architecture design, including functional block diagrams and interface definitions.
  • Develop performance specifications and interface drawings for electric motors, gear motors, mechanical transmissions with slew gears, planetary gears etc.
  • Create and implement test plans to validate designs and demonstrate functional and performance goals with a focus on safety and reliability.
  • Manage the detailed design and qualification activities performed by the suppliers and by Nextracker.
  • Work with other engineering teams to develop a DFMEA for each component and for the system.
  • Work closely with Supply Chain organization through the development cycle to ensure that all performance goals and requirements are met and to bring the components into mass production.
  • Guide the investigation and resolution of service anomalies and implement lessons learned into future products.

Required Qualifications

  • BS/MS/PhD in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
  • 5+ years’ experience in design and testing of electric motors and/or gears.
  • Experience developing performance specifications and interface drawings.
  • Experience developing test specifications and test procedures.
  • Experience with the full product lifecycle, from requirement definition to design, production, and sustaining engineering.
  • Experience performing trade studies and lifecycle cost analysis.
  • Strong eye toward safety, constructability, and system maintenance.
  • Ability to travel to Asia and possibly other locations 5-10 times per year
  • Ability to accommodate early morning and late night meetings

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with motor controllers.
  • Experience with gear and bearing design.
  • Experience with DFMEA, root cause analysis, investigation of service anomalies.
  • Mandarin is a plus

Pay is based on market location and may vary based on factors including experience, skills, education and other job-related reasons. The annual salary range for this position is $160,000 - $180,000.
