The PV and BESS Field Engineer II provides essential technical support within Acciona’ s Operations & Maintenance (O&M) team. Based in Houston, this role supports PV operations across North Texas sites, focusing on hands-on troubleshooting, system performance monitoring, and preventive maintenance.

The Engineer works under the guidance of the PV and BESS Field Supervisor and collaborates closely with site teams and engineering team to ensure safe, efficient, and reliable operation of solar and BESS assets. The role also contributes to engineering documentation, reviews site-level test reports and supports the implementation of reliability upgrades and retrofit campaigns. A strong understanding of power conversion systems, string-level diagnostics, and SCADA alarms is essential for success in this position.

Job Description

  • Lead or support troubleshooting activities related to system faults, underperformance, or repeated equipment failures.
  • Provide instant action towards the troubleshooting of inverters, trackers, combiner boxes, and power stations.
  • Perform detailed Root Cause Analysis (RCA) for recurring equipment faults, documenting findings and recommendations.
  • Monitor and analyze system performance data (SCADA, PI Vision) to identify underperformance trends.
  • Execute and verify preventive maintenance tasks, ensuring accurate documentation in Maximo or ETM.
  • Conduct site inspections and thermographic scans to assess asset health and inform maintenance planning.
  • Provide technical guidance and on-site training to site technicians and junior Field Engineers.
  • Coordinate with external vendors and OEMs for warranty claims and component replacements.
  • Ensure strict adherence to safety protocols; participate in toolbox talks and incident reporting.
  • Ensure field-level escalation procedures are followed during critical faults or plant outages
  • Perform quality control checks on completed maintenance work to ensure compliance with standards and procedures.
  • Liaise with warehouse, procurement, and vendors for spare part requests, returns, and service coordination.
  • Assist engineering with field implementation of new standards, inverter reset protocols, or tracker testing routines.
  • Perform visual inspections and torque verification for field wiring and mechanical connections.
  • Support commissioning punch list resolution including SCADA validation, sensor calibration, and cable continuity checks.
  • Perform inverter log extraction and analysis, escalating software or hardware issues to OEMs as needed.
  • Collaborate during E&C-to-O&M turnover, reviewing punch lists and validating system readiness.

Required Skills and Competencies

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Renewable Energy, or related technical field from an ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology) accredited university
  • 3–5 years of experience in utility-scale PV operations, including field troubleshooting and maintenance
  • Hands-on knowledge of BESS and PV system components (trackers, inverters, combiner boxes, power stations)
  • Experience with SCADA systems, PI Vision, and digital work order platforms (Maximo/ETM)
  • Proficiency in RCA and use of diagnostic tools (digital and manual).
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills
  • OSHA 30 certification (or willingness to obtain)
  • Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel to North Texas PV sites
