Job Description:

As a Principal Systems Engineer, you will drive system architecture, technical meetings, and engineering excellence across Fluence’s product portfolio. You will lead the definition of complex multi-megawatt (multi-MW) system architectures, guide multidisciplinary engineering teams, and directly influence product roadmaps.

This role requires deep technical expertise, exceptional systems thinking, and the ability to solve the energy storage industry's most challenging engineering problems while mentoring engineers and establishing world-class systems engineering best practices across the organization.

Key Responsibilities

  • Act as the systems architecture lead for utility-scale energy storage products (BESS) and platform development.

  • Develop, maintain, and oversee product system architecture, integrating batteries, power conversion systems (PCS), transformers, communications, auxiliary power, mechanical, software, and controls.

  • Lead system-level requirements, functional decomposition, interface control documents (ICDs), and technical specifications using tools like JAMA Connect or MBSE tools

  • Drive technical trade-offs and resolve complex, cross-disciplinary challenges

  • Lead preparation for technical reviews and provide technical guidance for major Product Development initiatives

  • Partner with Product Management, engineering leadership, and business stakeholders to define long-term technology roadmaps.

  • Convert customer, market, regulatory, and grid-connection requirements into highly scalable technical architectures.

  • Champion platform standardization, modularity, and product scalability across multiple generations of products

  • Lead system-level trade studies balancing performance, safety, reliability, manufacturability, cost, and schedule.

  • Own complex integration strategies across electrical, mechanical, controls, communications, and cloud interfaces.

  • Define verification and validation (V&V) strategies. Collaborate with lab and field engineering teams to oversee hardware testing, prototype validation, FAT/SAT protocols, and full qualification

  • Support, lead, and facilitate Root Cause Analysis (RCA), Management of Change, and incorporate field feedback into future designs

  • Lead product safety engineering activities, including DFMEA, FMEA, HARA, and Fault Tree Analysis (FTA)

  • Ensure product compliance with global standards, codes, and regulatory requirements (e.g., UL 9540, UL 9540A, IEC 62933, NFPA 855, NFPA 70, IEEE, etc).

  • Actively mentor, coach, and guide Systems Engineers across multiple product lines.

  • Drive collaboration across Product Management, Hardware, Software, Controls, Manufacturing, Quality, and Service teams

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related technical discipline.

  • 12+ years of industry experience in systems engineering, product development, or system architecture within renewable energy or power systems.

  • Extensive experience with utility-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), Power Conversion Systems (PCS), microgrids, or grid integration

  • Deep understanding of systems engineering principles, including requirements development, functional decomposition, interface management, system architecture, and verification & validation.

  • Strong technical background spanning electrical, mechanical, controls, embedded, and software systems.

  • Proven track record of conducting safety and risk assessments (DFMEA, FMEA, HARA) and root cause analysis.

  • Experience developing products compliant with international safety and performance standards (UL 9540, UL 9540A, IEC 62933, NFPA 855, etc.)
