Compensation: $29.43 per hour
Schedule: 1st shift Monday - Friday, 7:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
A Brief Summary of This Position
The Mill Operator is responsible for producing high-quality tubing through the operation of the mill and the Electric Resistance Weld (ERW) process. Working under minimal supervision and following established procedures, the Mill Operator ensures that the mill operates at optimal speed and yield while producing a high-quality product. This role includes adjusting guide rolls, side rolls, forming rolls, and weld head rolls to maintain quality and performing necessary changeovers and fine-tuning the mill afterward. The Mill Operator also conducts inspections and communicates maintenance needs. Safety is a priority, and adherence to all safety measures and proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is essential. Additionally, the Mill Operator plays a key role in providing continuity between shifts, maintaining housekeeping standards, and conducting weld testing to ensure sound welds and proper machine settings.
Essential Functions
Operate the mill to produce high-quality tubing in accordance with established specifications.
Perform routine quality checks using various measurement tools, such as tape measures, micrometers, and O.D. and PI tapes.
Safely operate ERW equipment, including material handling equipment (forklifts, cranes, and combi lifts).
Execute changeovers and fine-tune the mill to ensure continuous product quality.
Set up and operate weld test press and Eddy Tester for sound weld verification, using sonic testing and destructive testing methods.
Perform tooling changes and adjust guide rolls, side rolls, forming rolls, and weld head rolls as needed to ensure a quality product.
Monitor and adjust mill settings, including mill speed, squeeze, and weld parameters, to optimize production.
Maintain accurate records of inspections, scrap, downtime, and any other relevant production metrics.
Conduct regular visual inspections of tubing for length, straightness, and workmanship.
Ensure adherence to all safety protocols, wearing the required PPE and maintaining a safe work environment.
Perform minor mechanical repairs and communicate maintenance needs to the appropriate personnel.
Assist with training new Mill Operators and provide support to other operators when necessary.
Safely operate and inspect cranes and forklifts as part of material handling duties.
Communicate with operators on other shifts to ensure a smooth handoff and continuity of operations.
Maintain a clean and organized work area in compliance with safety and operational standards.
Collaborate with team members to troubleshoot issues, ensuring minimal downtime and optimal product quality.
Required Qualifications of Every Candidate (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities)
5 years of relevant work experience in a manufacturing or production environment.
Proficient in performing basic math functions, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and converting fractions to decimals.
Ability to read and understand blueprints/production cards and use measuring equipment such as tape measures, micrometers, and dial calipers.
Strong mechanical aptitude with prior experience in machinery operation and adjustments.
Ability to obtain forklift and overhead crane certification.
Strong attention to detail with the ability to identify substandard products, such as defective welds or poor material quality.
Effective communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to interact positively with coworkers and team members.
Must be flexible with work hours.
Must be able to work effectively in a team environment and collaborate with others to achieve operational goals.
