Sublime is advancing a breakthrough, clean, efficient, low-waste process for manufacturing cement, the essential ingredient in the most-consumed human-made material on Earth: concrete. Replacing 200-year-old manufacturing methods that are reliant on kilns running hotter than lava, our near-ambient-temperature, electrochemical technology manufactures industry-accepted cement and critical minerals. We’re partnering with leading general contractors, concrete producers, developers, and technology hyperscalers to deploy our clean, durable, beautiful Sublime Cement® in infrastructure that is defining the future of clean construction. Backed by some of the world’s largest cement producers, leading private investors, and the U.S. Department of Energy, we are assembling a talented, collaborative team that is "amped about cement" (pun intended) and committed to operating on the frontiers of material science, manufacturing, industry, construction, and commercial partnerships, to advance cement innovation that will endure for the next millennium.
Sublime is seeking a Managing Scientist to join the product R&D team and contribute to the development of the next generation of our decarbonized cement.
Ideal candidates will bring strong expertise in one or more of following areas: mineral processing (grinding) and particle technology, and/or suspension rheology. This Managing Scientist will be responsible for managing projects, conducting research and leading cross functional efforts to improve the performance of Sublime Cement through literature reviews, designing experiments, performing hand-on characterization and testing in lab, analyzing and interpreting data, and communicating results. This Scientist will also utilize their expertise to help set technical priorities and research strategy, plan and prioritize experiments, and contribute to the successful operation of our shared laboratory.
This Managing Scientist will manage a team of 2-5 people with significant cross-functional responsibilities that will report to Sublime’s Director of Product R&D. This position is in-person at Sublime’s headquarters in Somerville, MA, with occasional flexibility to work from home as appropriate based on team and project needs.

Responsibilities for this role will include: - Provide technical leadership in the development, validation, and optimization of cement formulations, with emphasis on mineral processing, milling, particle technology, and suspension rheology.
- Lead team and coordinate multiple R&D workstreams simultaneously, ensuring alignment with product development priorities and timelines. Provide guidance, mentorship, and technical oversight to other scientists and engineers.
- Partner closely with Pilot / Process R&D and other cross-functional teams to establish tight feedback loops between laboratory results, process constraints, and scale-up learnings.
- Design, execute, and interpret experimental programs involving milling and grinding, rheology, and cement property measurements; analyze data and clearly communicate results and implications.
- Develop and execute rheological testing strategies to characterize flow behavior, thixotropy, structuration, particle interactions and additive/admixture compatibility in cementitious systems.
- Evaluate and optimize grinding and classification parameters to control particle size distribution, surface area, and morphology in support of fresh and hardened cement performance.
- Contribute to cement performance and technology development through literature review, balancing chemistry/processing/manufacturability consideration, competitive analysis, and engagement with external experts, suppliers, and industry partners.
- Develop, validate, and implement new test methodologies to characterize cement performance, processing behavior, and scale-up risks.
- Maintain, calibrate, and expand laboratory capabilities, particularly in rheology and particle engineering.
- Author technical white papers, internal reports, and patent applications to document and protect Sublime’s innovations.
- Champion safety and responsible laboratory practices, particularly when developing new experimental methods and processes.
- Foster a collaborative, inclusive, and innovative team culture, setting expectations for rigor, accountability, and continuous learning.
Requirements Include: - Ph.D. in Materials Science & Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or related discipline.
- 2+ years of industry experience in research and development, materials engineering.
- Strong technical foundation in inorganic materials and particle-based systems, with demonstrated expertise in: Mineral processing and milling, Particle technology and PSD control, Suspension rheology and rheometry.
- Proven ability to develop and interpret structure–property relationships for cementitious systems to guide material design and performance optimization.
- Hands-on experience with characterization techniques such as laser diffraction, TGA, XRF, XRD, BET, optical microscopy, and/or SEM.
- Experience in leading research projects involving hypothesis-driven experimentation, DOE, and statistical data analysis to measure physical and chemical properties relevant to cementitious materials.
- Demonstrated leadership and project management skills, including the ability to prioritize work, develop and manage complex workflows, and drive progress across multiple R&D initiatives.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present technical findings clearly to diverse audiences and build effective cross-functional relationships across disciplines and organizational boundaries.
- Strong attention to detail and data quality, paired with the ability to maintain a system-level, strategic perspective.
- Ability to thrive in a dynamic, collaborative and inclusive startup environment with adaptability, professionalism, and a positive “can-do" attitude.
