Job Description

This role provides comprehensive managerial oversight and strategic leadership for Chemistry Programs across all assigned projects, from design through turn over for operations. The Chemistry Program Manager directs a team of chemistry professionals while maintaining accountability for the strategic vision, technical excellence, and regulatory compliance of all chemistry initiatives. This position leads the development and implementation of integrated chemistry management systems including chemical control strategies, monitoring frameworks, and sampling requirements with corresponding acceptance criteria. The manager establishes technical standards for action level protocols, alarm response procedures, and corrosion mitigation strategies while ensuring alignment with project schedules and budgetary constraints. Responsibilities include directing the establishment of laboratory QA/QC programs, defining chemistry transition protocols for startup and shutdown operations, and overseeing chemical addition system development across multiple projects. The role requires balancing technical depth with strategic breadth to effectively coordinate cross-functional stakeholder relationships, manage resource allocation, and represent chemistry interests in executive decision-making forums to ensure project success and operational excellence.


Job Profile Tasks/Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute strategic vision for chemistry programs, chemical processing systems, and related infrastructure across the power plant lifecycle.
  • Direct chemistry team activities, providing technical leadership, performance management, and professional development opportunities.
  • Lead collaboration with system engineers, analysts, and cross-functional stakeholders to optimize design and operational parameters for all systems requiring chemistry controls.
  • Oversee the design, implementation, and continuous improvement of chemical processing systems, including accountability for system performance metrics and quality assurance.
  • Establish and manage research initiatives to develop innovative and improved processes for chemical treatment, coordinating with R&D partners as needed.
  • Develop technical specifications and quality requirements for chemistry process equipment; manage procurement relationships with equipment suppliers and ensure critical design characteristics are met.
  • Lead and manage vendor and subcontractor relationships for design, construction, delivery, and installation of chemical equipment, including contract negotiation and performance oversight.
  • Direct the development and implementation of comprehensive standard operating procedures for chemical and analytical systems.
  • Provide expert consultation for complex troubleshooting of chemical processes; establish variance response protocols and direct diagnostic activities.
  • Collaborate with regulatory team to establish, implement, and enforce safety policies and procedures for personnel working with hazardous chemicals, processes, and equipment.
  • Partner with regulatory team to develop appropriate safety controls for chemical treatment operations, ensuring alignment with nuclear safety culture principles.
  • Ensure departmental compliance with environmental and safety regulations; represent chemistry operations in regulatory audits and inspections.
  • Approve and oversee implementation of policies and procedures for processing and handling solid, liquid, and gaseous materials.
  • Direct waste management strategy and oversee waste permitting activities.
  • Manage the design, planning, and implementation of laboratory and equipment layouts, particularly for new processes or operations.
  • Establish and maintain configuration management systems for all equipment, chemical inputs, outputs, and waste streams.
  • Develop and manage departmental budget, resource allocation, and strategic staffing plans.
  • Represent the Chemistry department in management meetings and cross-functional initiatives.
  • Foster a professional work environment, mentor team members, and promote continuous improvement principles.
  • Maintain professional demeanor and behavior at all times in all forms of communication.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by manager.

Job Profile Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in chemical engineering, nuclear engineering, material science, material science engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related science degree; Master's degree preferred.
  • Ten plus years' experience in related field and five plus years of leadership experience managing nuclear process engineering teams and activities.
  • Seven or more years nuclear-related experience with demonstrated progression of responsibilities.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of nuclear regulations, regulatory review processes, inspection protocols, nuclear codes and standards, budgeting, planning, and project management.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and lead high-performing technical teams in a nuclear environment.

Location: 530 Gaither Road, Rockville, MD

Work Site Expectations: 4 days in office / Remote
Travel Expectations: Up to 10% as needed
Hours: 8:00am-5:00pm, Mon-Fri

Compensation

As required by Maryland and other applicable state law, X Energy, LLC (X-energy) lists the expected compensation range for a publicly advertised job opportunity based upon the job requirements (e.g. education/training, experience, skill sets, etc.). A reasonable estimate for this position at the level of experience required is:

$133,125 - $221,875
