Intern, Controls Engineering, Summer 2026
Location: Newark, CA
As an intern, you must possess a strong understanding of Mechanical, Automotive, Electrical and Controls theories and fundamentals. Our ideal candidate exhibits a can-do attitude, and approaches work with vigor and determination.
Please note this is a pipeline req, by applying to this role, you are interested in at least one of the following teams:
· Chassis Systems and Powertrain Controls
· Diagnostic Controls
· Test Engineer, Model Based Design, Controls Software
· Vehicle Controls Calibration
Role/Responsibilities:
· Own one or more technical projects related to controls software engineering from idea to completion
· Apply concepts from coursework to drive creative solutions to complex problems
· Assist in developing unit tests based on software requirements
· Contribute to automated regression testing efforts
· Work on robust control algorithms to architect and design diagnostic functions on ECU level to aid fault detection, reaction and handling in application layer
· Wire sensors and install data acquisition equipment on vehicles
· Develop simulation tools that enable objective decision-making for control system architectures, calibration, and formulating requirements
· Ability to work in a fast paced, highly collaborative environment

Preferred Qualifications:
· Experience using MATLAB, Embedded C, C++ or Python Scripting languages
· Experience with embedded control systems
· Basic understanding of Simulink/Model-Based Design
· Basic knowledge of model-based design using Matlab/Simulink/Stateflow
· Exposure to software testing concepts and version control systems (e.g., Git)
· Proven knowledge of controls fundamentals
· Ability to apply book knowledge to real-world scenarios
· Fundamental understanding of mechanics, thermals and basic electrical circuits
· Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
· Excellent written and verbal communication skills
· Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment
Education:
· Field(s) of study: Mechanical, Automotive, Computer, Aerospace, and Electrical Engineering, or related field
· Currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree program at an accredited university
· Proof of enrollment in current or into next program (MS, PhD)
