A Brief Summary of This Position

The Fitter Welder 7 position is an individual contributor. This person must be a highly driven individual that will fit and weld metal and/or aluminum components together to fabricate or repair products according to layouts, blueprints, or work orders using a variety of welding equipment and/or processes.

Essential Functions

Fitter:

  • Follow fit and layout instructions described in detail drawings
  • Ability to tack weld material into place
  • Use motorized grinders, motorized buffers, stone grinders, and drills to clean and prep material for fitting and tacking
  • Use overhead cranes or jib cranes to move and hold material in place
  • Assemble products of the unit by tack welding various small parts to pole shafts using the GMAW, FCAW, and SAW welding process.
  • Work with steel pipe and other steel shapes and measure on radiused surfaces
  • Works in confined areas at various locations of the pole assembly line as necessary to accurately measure and assemble components described above. Moves under, around, and over poles as necessary, to get into proper position to assemble pole assembly

Welder:

  • Maintain and operate production tooling and fixtures as well as all welding equipment in a safe and secure manner
  • Ability to produce high quality welds by means of GMAW arc welding in the fabrication of communication towers, components, and overhead sign structures with low non-conformity rate
  • Perform welding operations requiring a limited amount of planning of work from blueprints or other written specifications and determine operation sequence while consistently meeting production goals

Additional Essential Functions:

  • Utilize all safety devices and wear all mandatory personal protective safety equipment
  • Read and complete labor reporting system, standard shop forms and blueprints
  • Follow written procedures and specifications
  • Must meet code requirements including ultrasonic testing
  • Make management aware of any training needs you have. Consult your management immediately if you are being asked to perform work for which you are not trained and/or are not comfortable doing because of potential safety or risk implications.
  • Responsible and accountable for maintaining a clean and organized workplace while implementing LEAN practices
  • Perform other duties as required and/or assigned

Required Qualifications of Every Candidate (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)

  • Graduation from an acceptable Technical Training Program focused on welding
  • Ability to read weld symbols and understand blueprints
  • The ability to calculate simple mathematics and interpret shop drawings
  • Ability to operate overhead cranes, prior experience preferred
  • Must be able to use and accurately read a tape measure
  • Able to lift up to 50 pounds
  • Multi-pass, stack layering welding experience
  • Must be able to use GMAW welding equipment for tack welds.
  • Must be able to pass FCAW, GMAW, and SAW weld test and maintain certification

Highly Qualified Candidates Will Also Possess These Qualifications

  • Must have a high awareness for safety at all times
  • Previous experience with fitting/welding in a manufacturing environment
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent
  • AWS certified welder operator qualification
  • The ability to accurately and honestly check one’s own work for quality assurance

Working Conditions & Physical Efforts:

The job is performed in an indoor shop environment. The temperature range can be from 100+ degrees in the summer to about 40 degrees in the winter. Most operations may expose employee to some type of disagreeable working conditions (wind, cold, heat, dust, dirt, fumes, noise, vibration, water, and/or oil). Working conditions may vary with specific work assignments. Exposure to electrical hazards, grease, loud noises, and outside elements occur continually or regularly. Extreme care should be taken to prevent damage to equipment or department personnel in the area of operations especially when performing setups. The job requires safety glasses, hearing protection, and metatarsal safety shoes be worn at all times. The employee must be able to spend the entire work shift on their feet within the shop environment. The incumbent must also be able to wear the required personal protective equipment (PPE) for working in the production facility.

  • Exposure to additional heat during fitting/welding process above ambient temperature and direct exposure to weld fumes
  • Exposure to noise while grinding and hammering requires hearing protection to be worn at all times
  • Sparks from grinding and welding require proper PPE
  • Possible burns from hot steel during welding processes, eye injuries from grinding, welding, and cutting sparks, flash burns from welding and heat fatigue
  • Potential for hearing loss if proper PPE is not used

Hazards:

This job requires handling metal objects, some of which have sharp edges. Extreme care and awareness should be taken for all production jobs. Below are some common hazards that exist for this particular position. Set up and run of equipment provides the potential for injury through slips, falls, strains, pinch points, tripping hazards, shot blasting equipment, high pressure air nozzles, material handling equipment.
