Position Summary
As an Engineer, within the Transmission & Market Fundamentals team, you will collaborate with team leadership and senior colleagues to execute critical functions that underpin the successful development, construction, and operation of utility-scale solar, wind, and battery energy storage (BESS) projects.
This position will be located at Deriva Energy Headquarters based in Charlotte, NC
Key Responsibilities
Development activities:
- Revise mid- to long-term production cost models to reflect changes in generation and transmission topologies
- Conduct medium- and long-term production cost analyses to establish an internal perspective on congestion trends for both greenfield and acquisition projects
- Evaluate the commercial implications for projects arising from planned generation additions or retirements, transmission infrastructure development, and changes in energy market fundamentals
- Provide support for project interconnection activities with ISOs, TPs, and TOs during the project's study phase by reviewing and analyzing studies submitted by ISOs, TPs, and third-party consultants
- Engage in collaborative discussions with external consultants to facilitate the preparation of independent reports on transmission, congestion, and curtailment in support of project financing initiatives
- Facilitate project offtake activities by conducting internal production cost analyses and/or reviewing assessments provided by third-party consultants
Operational support:
- Revise short- to medium-term production cost models to reflect changes in market dynamics and grid conditions
- Conduct production cost analyses across various market footprints to internally assess near- and mid-term congestion trends
- Assist the trading team by conducting scenario-based analyses to mitigate market risks associated with operational projects through participation in Day-ahead and FTR/CRR/TCR markets
Regulatory overview:
- Stay informed about evolving market regulations that may affect the commercial viability of projects
- Engage in relevant stakeholder forums across various ISOs and RTOs
Market Fundamentals:
- Evaluate the implications of market design modifications on both operational and development projects
- Establish an internal projection of long-term Energy, Capacity, and REC prices, based on anticipated shifts in supply and demand dynamics within the relevant market footprint
Basic Qualifications for Engineer III
- Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or other closely related discipline
- Three (3) years or more of experience in related fields in addition to degree
Basic Qualification for Senior Engineer
- Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or other closely related discipline
- Five (5) years or more of increasingly diverse or complex experience in related field in addition to degree
Desired Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering with an emphasis in power systems
- Master’s degree in electrical engineering or similar discipline
- Two (2) years or more of experience performing steady state/production cost/market operations analysis at an ISO, transmission owner or technical consultant
- A PhD degree may substitute for three (3) years of work experience
- Experience using power flow or production cost modeling tools like Power World, TARA, PSS/E, UPLAN, PORMOD, PROBE
- Experience understanding and/or performing ISO system impact studies and transmission owner facilities studies
- Excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to translate complex technical concepts to a variety of stakeholders
- Ability to work independently while providing subject matter expertise in a collaborative team environment
- Self-motivated with a high level of initiative and accountability
- Excellent written and oral communication and organizational skills
Working Conditions
- This position is located at our headquarters in Charlotte, NC
- Available for travel up to 25%
- The hiring manager may elect to fill this position at the higher-level dependent upon skills and experience
