POSITION SUMMARY
As Director of Origination, this role is responsible for originating new business across defined U.S. regions — developing customer relationships, communicating Deriva's story and product offerings, and structuring transactions across the company's operational and development portfolio. This role drives execution of origination activities, ensures profitability and growth, and manages commercial transaction risk. This role works closely with the Head of Origination and leads cross-functional deal teams through the full transaction lifecycle, from bid through close.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Origination Strategy & Deal Execution
Lead execution of origination strategy aligned with Deriva's business objectives, within an assigned market or customer segment
Originate, structure, and negotiate PPAs and related offtake agreements with utility, C&I, and large-load counterparties
Secure long-term agreements with utilities and corporations to support financing and buildout of new renewable and storage projects
Develop PPA restructuring, blend-and-extend, and other structured product solutions to improve existing asset economics, including bilateral deal structures
Evaluate RFPs, lead bid strategy, and lead internal stakeholders (EPC, analytics, legal, development, finance) through bid preparation, competitive analysis, and procurement
Prepare approval materials, in tandem with the Head of Origination, outlining commercial strategy and key risks for bids, term sheets, and definitive agreements
Maintain an up-to-date deal pipeline and organized bid/transaction documentation
Customer, Market & Portfolio Development
Provide commercial input to inform greenfield development siting strategy and evaluate origination opportunities for prospective M&A targets
Support merchant-exposure planning as legacy PPAs expire, evaluating market timing, pricing, tenor, and risk allocation
Prepare proposals and presentation materials for customers and buyers
Monitor RTO market and regulatory developments and translate them into actionable deal strategy
Build and maintain trusted relationships with utilities, C&I customers, power trading firms, and market peers
WORKING CONDITIONS
This is an in-office position located in our corporate headquarters in Charlotte, NC.; remote may be considered for a highly qualified and well-networked candidate.
Relocation assistance to Charlotte, NC is available.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree required
Eight (8) or more years of experience in the energy industry
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree required; advanced degree a plus
10 or more years of experience in the energy industry, including a minimum of five (5) years in power origination
Demonstrated success securing long-term power sale agreements with utilities and corporations in the clean energy sector
Demonstrated ability to lead, structure, negotiate, and execute power sale agreements with internal and external advisors
Working knowledge of RTO operations, transmission, and generation/storage technologies in WECC, SPP, and ERCOT, or MISO and PJM
Strong understanding of power market regulatory frameworks, dynamics, and pricing mechanisms
Strong sales, negotiation, leadership, and time-management skills, with the ability to motivate cross-functional deal teams
Excellent analytical skills, with the ability to assess risk and market data to inform decisions
Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail; able to manage multiple concurrent deals in a fast-paced environment
Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with sound judgment and integrity in prior roles
