Position Summary

We are seeking an entrepreneurial Senior Director, Institutional Giving to join our Advancement team as we embark on an ambitious campaign to raise $100 million over the next three years. This position reports to the Head of Major Gifts and will manage one other team member.

The Senior Director, Institutional Giving is a frontline fundraiser principally responsible for identifying and securing institutional funding opportunities, building and strengthening relationships with organizational funders, and ensuring excellent and timely delivery of proposals, reports, and funder communications to motivate continued, growing support over time.

The Senior Director, Institutional Giving plays a pivotal role in creating fundraising strategies for the organization and securing funding for Rewiring America’s mission.

What You’ll Do

Relationship Management and Donor Strategy

  • Proactively identify prospective institutional donors through research, relationship-mapping, and outreach.
  • Develop moves management strategies for a portfolio of 40-50 donors and prospects.
  • Serve as the lead Relationship Manager to high-value Institutional funders and prospects. 
  • Support the VP, Advancement and CEO with their existing portfolio of approximately 10 institutional funders.
  • Ensure consistent and meaningful communications with funders to facilitate strong relationship-building and stewardship.
  • Assist in planning and execution of funder events.

Pipeline Building and Grants Management

  • With the Director, Foundation Relations, develop and maintain a plan to solicit, apply for, secure, and fulfill institutional fundraising grants.
  • Directs pipeline building efforts by researching prospective funders and advising on strategies to motivate significant gifts that align with funder priorities.
  • Serve as the lead on foundation grants to Rewiring America. With the Director, Foundation Relations, prepare, submit, and track proposals, and ensure that the objectives of grants and funding agreements are met and reported according to appropriate deadlines.
  • Track trends and opportunities to ensure that the case for support expresses Rewiring’s unique value proposition and considers donor/funder priorities.

Revenue Tracking and Financials

  • Track all institutional revenue and collaborate with members of the Advancement and Finance teams on budgeting, reporting, and audits.
  • Uses data-driven insights to measure activities and success. 

Fundraising Operations

  • Contribute to the development of the Advancement Team's annual fundraising plan.
  • Create departmental policies, procedures, and workflows.

Core qualifications: 

  • Strong commitment to the mission, policies and goals of Rewiring America.
  • 10+ years of experience applicable to nonprofit institutional fundraising.
  • Proven track record cultivating and stewarding institutional giving relationships. 
  • Experience securing and managing 7-figure grants.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex concepts in an engaging and accessible style to funders.
  • Experience crafting fundraising projections and designing work plans to achieve revenue targets.
  • Deep understanding of philanthropic trends.
  • Familiarity with the best practices and ethical standards of nonprofit fundraising.
  • Flexibility and the ability to adapt in a fast-growing organization where team roles and responsibilities are still evolving.
  • Comfort with ambiguity and the ability to take initiative without clearly defined plans
  • Facility with technology to support remote team work.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or graduate degree and/or equivalent work experience.
  • Excellent references demonstrating a strong track record in securing institutional grants for organizations with climate-focused missions.
  • Content knowledge in climate, renewable energy, and/or building electrification.

Compensation and Benefits

The salary range for this position is $160,000 - $200,000 USD, commensurate with qualifications and experience.

  • Employees are also eligible for pre-tax transportation benefits. 
  • Full Time Employees will receive 160 hours of vacation time, 80 hours of health leave, up to 2 days of casual leave, and 24 hours of volunteer leave annually. 
  • Employees will also receive 11 paid holidays throughout the calendar year (13 days during Presidential and Congressional elections). 
  • We have an office closure between Christmas and New Year. 
  • Regular, full-time employees and part-time employees are eligible to take up to sixteen weeks of parental leave, in all cases related to birth, adoption, or foster care starting from the first day of employment. 
  • We offer access to professional development resources including up to $2000 per calendar year to use towards your growth and development.
